Nurturing Knowflakes,
The 15th century French nobleman Charles, duke of Orleans (Charles d'Orleans) wrote this rondeau about the poet Francois Villon, which I put into English.
(It's title in French is "Sur un Mauvais Garcon")
For a Naughty Boy
He who has drunk his shames all dry
Does not much care what people say;
He lets their mocking pass away
Before his eyes like clouds gone by.
If in the streets at him they cry
He shakes his head with visage gay.
He who has drunk his shames all dry
Does not much care what people say.
To him all jests are welcome nigh;
Folk laugh, his laugh must too give way;
No blush from him could any sway;
No lost composure will belie
He who has drunk his shames all dry.
Pretty apt, wouldn't you say? I mean considering. . .
Imperishable Illumination,
Robert Chancellor
