The Trees Speak - CONCLUSION
http://fs.jorge.com/archives/History_Regional/R6_History1891To1945.htmAs with any public agency, the Forest Service has faced innumerable problems and controversies. The Pacific Northwest has been at the forefront of many of the battles over the establishment of forest reserves, land frauds, fighting massive fires, building an effective ranger organization, the Great Depression, and the unsettling World War II. In spite of the difficulties, or perhaps because of them, the Forest Service has grown to be a well-respected public agency with a deep concern about the management of the national forests. Today, the Forest Service, especially in the Pacific Northwest, is in the middle of new battles, such as multiple-use management, new forestry and new perspectives, clearcutting, preservation of old growth/ancient forest, wilderness, herbicide and pesticide use, spotted owl habitat, endangered salmon runs of the Columbia River drainage, and many additional topics. These new societal problems and political controversies are beyond the scope of this paper, but they do need systematic treatment in the future.

Despite all "conservation and protection" efforts, the Pacific salmon are rapidly and "unexpectedly" disappearing.
