Well, we are down to the wire. Election Day is Tuesday, and we've done about all we can do to get these school bond issues passed to bring the Cripple Creek-Victor schools into the modern era. I do think we have actually done pretty well with voters. (Please, please, please God!) We struck out on getting city council endorsements, but we used those opportunities in front of councils to throw the issues into dramatic, high relief and get ourselves some press.

We've also campaigned in many other ways ... mailings, hand-out flyers, yard signs, door-to-door talking, phone calls ... and I believe we have gotten our message heard over the rantings of the opposition.

The opposition, oddly enough, is centered in the staff of a really amateurish weekly "newspaper" here, with a staff of three, all of whom are running for school board here against the reasonable candidates and on an anti-bond platform. Of course, it is contrary to professional journalistic ethics to run for office and cover it in your rag, but those guys don't care. Because they put their rag in everybody's mailboxes weekly, whether you want it or not, we had to do what we could to secure coverage in the other papers.

Here's what came out in the other two papers in this, the last week of the campaign. On balance, I think these stories do the cause good, so I'm glad we played the whole scene out last week rather than fold our tent and withdraw our endorsement request from the council once we figured out they were going to be too chicken to take a stand for the kids. There is some backlash building among voters against those councils anyway.

It has been a very busy couple of months, all pointing to Nov. 1. Any white light, prayers and good vibes we can get through election day is bound to help bring out the caring voters and keep the curmudgeons at home.

Thank you so much, Ani! We need it. There are signs from the universe that it will go our way, but it could be very close. The voters have been bombarded with a lot of unfair, incorrect, twisted anti-bond propaganda, and I can only pray that wisdom will prevail.

Sadly, it's gone from bad to worse. That doesn't mean the light couldn't possibly gather and grow and outshine the darkness, but everything now is on edge. Somewhat more concrete details in Rainbow's Halloween thread, but I can't be entirely specific in public just now.

Anyway, if there be more light and love available, just keep on sending it. Things feel rather grim.

Hey! Y'all were right about down the road. One year later, the rotten schlemiel who pulled every trick in the book to sink the bond issue tucked his tail between his legs and slinked on outta town. Two years later, and we passed the bond. I made the website for the committee, and the committee worked their buns off, and the papers and City Councils got on board, and that nasty old high school with the bad air and no fire sprinklers and too hot/too cold spots is going to be gutted and rebuilt.

Light and love put to good use.
