I heat with wood and have many four leggeds in the house so I use these plants in every room. All are easy to grow and many easy to propagate!

The good news is that a classic NASA study found that common house plants could improve air quality. In fact, they reported that houseplants were able to remove up to 87 percent of air toxins in 24 hours. The recommendation? Use 15 to 18 "good-sized" house plants in 6- to 8-inch diameter containers for an 1,800 square-foot house.

Plants can remove a variety of toxic air emissions including ammonia, formaldehyde, carbon monoxide, benzene, xylene and trichloroethytene. See the box above for some of the best plant varieties to choose, and remember-the healthier the plant, the more purifying it will be.

hey Juni heart

Great info!
Every year we bring in our patio plants into the house...
all 50 of them.
They double in size every Winter and we put them back outside in Spring.
It is a great Ritual.

My family members have asthma and I am an artist with paints abounding.
It has substantially reduced any and all fumes that may have persisted.
They also make me feel the house is a home with all the Green
in the Winter Windows.

Thanks for the link.

Also, if one is cleaning....
Only use vinegar and believe it or not....
Grain Alcohol.

I buy a bottle every Spring and dilute it in a spray bottle.
It kills 100% of germs and leaves no poisonous residue or phosphates.

Goes along way too and you have no recyclables.

That along with Borax 20 lb. powder works Wonders...
saves money. 100 % healthy and nothing to think about.
Washes clothes,dishes...even your hair if you so desire.

You`re welcome !

I also have numerous plants I put out in spring and return to their safe winter home in a Southern window . They rest in a room shared by the kitties that love the indoor jungle. Many plants are old and gifted by those no longer on this plane.
To clean the leaves and soil from hitch hiking bugs ect, I use diluted vinegar. To kill the aphids/spider mites that dare to encroach, I use alcohol diluted in a spray. All natural, safe and keeps my four leggeds safe too.

I have a fantastic list for vinegar uses in the home, garden and for healthy living I will share (when I locate it).

To our health, welfare and happiness ! flower

Great info Juni & Chahlie grin

I would imagine that all of these plants are safe for kitties too? kittylove I don't keep many plants in the home because my cats like to eat them or knock them over. Other than hanging them do you have any suggestions or thoughts on what to do about that since you have cats yourself Juni?

Good question Veneo and the bane of cat and plant lovers.

I train my kitties when I bring them into the fold with oat grass and natural kitty repellents. The oat grass I grow in containers on the floor and sprinkle in catnip. I put a repellent on the no-no`s and if kitty is very stubborn, I get a can filled with pennies and shake to startle them too.
Keeping fresh grass available year around is the key. I`ve had great success and never had a sick kitty.
The aspca has a fantastic list of indoor and outdoor plants, trees & shrubs toxic to kitties and I recommend a print out for all four legged lovers.

Also if I do have a toxic one, like my seasonal amarylis`s, I put them on an inexpensive home made pedestal to keep them high and use a repellent for good measure. My tall book shelves hold plants , ceiling to floor pole plant hangers take little room and look stunning. I even hang from ceilings. laugh Window hangers and even your fridge is high enough to deter.

Here`s the link to the toxic plants...bonus, pictures to help identfy! kittylove

waveJuni Dear,

I have a question for you, my house plants have got a white kind of fungus growing on the top of the soil and I just re-potted them about three weeks ago and it's back again and its killing my plants. It even moved into the filter system of my turtle tank, but I have this part under control, but not my plants.

You got any helpful tips you would like to share.

Thank-You Juni flower

Seems a lot of yucky mold/fungus about this year
A safe bet for all plants would be cinnamon. Liberally sprinkle the soil with it and wait a few days to water.

If the plants are hardy, stiffer measures can be used... like a vinegar mixture. Since most fungus is caused by overwatering, poor drainage or lack of air circulation, I would make sure not to overwater, the plants have good air flow and the right sunlight requirements.

Once fungus arrives, it hates to depart so use the cinnamon and see how it goes.
If it isn`t working, let me know what kind of plants and where they are placed
flower

Good luck and happy spicing to you! laugh

Thank-You so much Juniperb thankyou

I really feel it's because of what you said above, a lack of air circulation and the plants have not had good air flow and the right sunlight requirements sense I moved to my new home, almost 4yrs ago. They got it a little time just before Christmas this year and I'm starting to think that just maybe I'm not meant to have house plants in this house, as I've had my one plant now for over 16yrs and now it's almost dead because of it. Wow, thats some fast. frown2

Thanks Again for the handy tips. flower

Maybe I've just got to focus and give all my time and attention to my outdoor gardens this year," COME SPRING ". spring Instead of the homestead. lol
