I am an avid student of "western" astrology or that which Linda Goodman follows...however I have been meeting a number of people who have studied the Hindu astrology for years and finds that it is deeper and more accurate than that of western astrology.

For instance, they fervently believe, when I gave my birth details to many of such people, that I had but a Pisces Moon and a Leo rising - though according to the relationship signs of Linda Goodman, I have a Leo rising and an Aries Moon. I have noticed that in this astrology, the moon and the rising take one step back...for instance anyone with a Taurus moon according to "western astrology" actually has an Aries Moon according to the Hindu system, and those with a cancer rising according to the western tables, have a Gemini rising according to the Hindu calculations. Other astrologers (western) about 3 of them have confirmed that I have a Virgo rising not that of Leo as stated by the Hindu calculation and as that of Linda in relationship signs - though in this book, there was stated a time difference could be involved.

How does one go about explaining this system - as I have found a number of instances where the hindu system is equally accurate in descriptions and surprisingly predictions (though there is a logical explanation for that!)As you can see I have justified my Virgo rising, but what I would really like to know, how do you explain this to the others, when I tell them they have a Virgo moon and they scoff and say the have a Leo moon.

Does any one have any suggestions ?
Would love to hear from you ?

love
druid.

Hi Druid,

First of all, please don't ever get in an argument with anyone about which system of astrology is "right." That's about as productive as disagreeing on matters of politics or religion. There are several different systems of astrology, and they are ALL "right" according to their own internal rules. It's just a question of which system you have studied and are most comfortable with.

The main difference between western and hindu (or Vedic) astrology is that the western system uses the tropical (earth-centered) zodiac, while the Vedic system uses the sidereal (Sun-centered) zodiac. Both systems accurately measure the correct positions of the planets, they are just using different coordiate systems. (For example, if you live in New York and I live in Seattle, you might say that North Dakota is in the West, while I will insist that it is in the East ... but neither of us is "wrong.")

If you find that you resonate with the Vedic system more than the western, by all means use it ,,, many outstanding astrologers do, and most of the good astrology software can calculate charts using either method. But it is important to remember not to mix placements and interpretations between the two, or you will come up with results that are inconsistent and not very useful. Hope that makes it a little clearer.

Silly girl, nothing wrong with saying your own preference . I much prefer the western system too, because that's what I know and am comfortable with. I was just pointing out that the vedic system isn't "mistaken" when it comes up with different calculations, it's just using a different method of mapping them.

Dear Greg,

thanks for your information on the vedic system. I never ever want to get into an argument on astrology since it is speaks its own personal story to everyone.

Its just that while I'm have a fiery moon according to the western astrology, which means I am passionate and volatile and headstrong in my emotions, according to the vedic, I sport a Pisces moon which means I am subtle, tricky, gentle, peaceful, etc...emotionally.

In fact according to the western system, I have my Saturn in Aries but according to the vedic system, I have my Saturn in Pisces and my 8th house is in Taurus when according to the western system it is in Aries.

Doesn't that make a great deal of difference in reading one's horoscope

Oops sorry Greg got cut off...

Besides, I never ever want to get into arguements with the astrologers of the vedic system because

(a) I am not a professional astrologer
(b) I feel everyone has a right to his/her
own system
(c) arguements seldom lead to anything at
all except anger and disharmony

Infact it is the vedic astrologers who defend and force their system onto me (the ones I have met saying that astrology is of Indian birth and what would the westerners ever know?). I know these are karmic tests to subdue the Aries moon (Aries always encouter people who like to disagree) in me...to understand and I am learning with great effort.

Thanks for your reply.

I know about those Aries moons, Druid.

You're right, it is confusing. There are many different systems and schools of thought in astrology, and I don't know of any way they can all be reconciled. You just have to find what feels right to you and stick with it.

Dear Gregg,

Thanks for your reply.

I sincerely feel the "western" calculation seems right - I am often idealistic despite my Capricorn sun and virgo rising (which was confirmed to you with my painstaking explanations !)

I just like to appreciate that you took the time to write back. It feels good to know you've been answered - especially when there is a light confusion.

Thank you...
