I cannot do this story justice, since I am relating it only by memory, but I will try. So often we forget the Power our words have over children. A single word can make or break a Life. Creativity is a gift from Spirit; yet it is forcibly stifled in exchange for conformity. Here it goes: A young boy was in school one day, and the teacher gave the instruction to draw a flower with crayons. The child made a beautiful, colorful flower, and the stern teacher walked by and said, "Flowers are red. Green leaves are always green..." The boy replied, "There are many colors in the world, and I choose to see every One!" The teacher was furious! She sent the boy to the corner to reflect upon his ignorance. Hours later this young child came up to the teacher and requested to speak. In a humbled voice he said, "Flowers are red. Green leaves are always green..." A few weeks after, the parents of the unhappy child received a job transfer. In the new school, the boy's new teacher walked by as he was drawing his flower. "What do we have here?" the teacher asked. The boy replied,"Flowers are red. Green leaves are always green..." The teacher smiled with genuine Love and said, "There are many colors in the world, and I want YOU to choose to see every One!" The moral to this story is this: We are ALL teachers to children. Some work in schools. Some are parents or grandparents. Some are older brothers and sisters-uncles and aunts. Some only get the opportunity to speak to a child in passing at a grocery store or in a park. The question is, "Which of the two types of teachers will YOU be?" Your answer could make all the difference.

Deathnomore,
What a great story, and how true!

I almost flunked 1st grade because I didn't stay in the lines when I colored!!! What I really remember about school was all the spankings I got from the teachers but not what they were for And I learned that school sucked, afraid that stuck to this day, some 38 yrs later, started school when I was four you do the math . Hopefully they're better nowdays at least they can't spank the kids for chewing gum, etc... Of course now days the kids would shoot them.

The best teachers aren't necessarily in schools

Hi, Buddy! Your comments ring of Truth to me. Things are better today, but not by much. We don't spank as much these days--we just drug the kids and create zombies! Peace.

Deathnomore, interesting statement that you said, we just drug children now.

How true that rings society, that active children with vivid imaginations have their spirits broken by Rx's. Why is it that our society wants to silence the children?

Got any thoughts on that?

We, as a society, silence what we do not understand. We demand conformity. Unusual or diverse opinions in children are not encouraged. They have to be broken--like horses. Their free Spirits must be contained. ADD children defy authority, and if enough of them grew up undisturbed, it would shift the balance of power from the status quo, as these are our future leaders. Their unique creativity must be stifled. But on a smaller scale, psychiatrists and pharmaceutical companies do it for the money. Teachers do it, because they are lazy and most of them are not worthy of teaching our children. And alas, parents have just been duped! Parents also have little "time" for misbehavior, so it's laziness as well. That statement is not very PC, but so what?!? The Truth must be said. Most parents are too busy earning a "living" to raise a child. Children require a great deal of attention, especially the most creative Ones (ADD children are near genius in creativity). We have changed our Uni-versal motto from "Love makes the world go 'round" to "Drugs make the world go 'round." We have a hip, chic, new drug for everything! We tell our children not to use drugs, but then in the same breath we tell them to take their little Ritalin pill "like a good little girl or boy." Love isn't even considered anymore as a solution, when Love is the only real solution to society's ills. Peace.

Oh Deathnomore...

I read your comments, they seem incredibly harsh...

Maybe things are just different, here in Cambridge, England...

The school that my son attends is incredibly appreciative as far as talented children are concerned. They are never, ever beaten (I'll agree that this is a fairly recent occurrence, however. I remember being given the odd swipe 'round the head as a child...). If a teacher did that today, I can assure you they'd be out of a job. NO ONE hits my son!!!). Also, those children whom do not display any obvious talents are still encouraged.

My son really likes school. He feels happy and secure. When he does something fantastic they always ring up and tell me... to the extent that he is embarrassed...

Also this... There is nothing my son likes less than to have too much attention focused on him. He likes be allowed to "just get on with it, Mummy". Remember, children love their space, just as much as we do.

Yours, Tanya

England is our wisest country! They have banned compulsory immunizations (another thread altogether), and they have an educational system unsurpassed by any in the world. I am also obtaining a great respect for their doctors. It is not the same in America. It's not the beating of children that we do here, it's the drugging. We use over 90 percent of the entire world's supply of Ritalin!!!!!! And yes, children need their free time as well, but they also need QUALITY "time" with a parent. It may only be an hour a day, but they need to feel important--that their opinions matter. That's what I mean by attention. I am glad your son is so bright. You are obviously a wonderful parent! Peace.

Thanks for your comments, Deathnomore...

Funny you should mention the immunisation thing, we've just received a form for the Meningitis C jab. My son does not want this (although he had all the jabs recommended in his younger years) until we have enough information to make the appropriate decision. Very difficult. Most of the nurses I've spoken to feel that it's not really necessary, so... Well, we'll see!!!

As to my being a wonderful parent> Mmmmm!!! I just feel very lucky lucky that I have a child whom I find very entertaining and wise. Nothing to do with me. Sheer luck!!! I often find myself wondering "My God, where did he spring from!!!"

Yours laughing
Tanya

Deathnomore, thank you so much for that story and for the comments on ADD. I myself have ADD and I had a horrible time in school from day one. School is like murder to the spirit of an ADD child. I am still healing. I refuse to take medication. I agree with you about the hypocrisy our society has about drugs. Thank you again for your comments; they make me feel very understood, which does not happen to me often!

Speaking from the other side of the mirror...

I've always been the daydreamer, the odd one. I have one son who has Aspergers and one son who is being evaluated for a developmental disorder.

Both are the light of my life. There is a shift coming in the way we educate our children and I believe we are at ground zero.

Deathnomore, you talk about vaccines. Are you linking that with the upsurge of cases if ADD/Autism/PDD etc.? No one truely knows why. Have you seen the hearings?

I am so grateful for my kids because they are here to teach me and now I must return the favor...Yes NT/Normal people can be so cruel but just remember that Normal can be a handicap.

No let's go and make some changes....

The system of public education is changing.
It must.
It will.
How many children must die before we real-ize
they are unhappy.
The children are rebelling.
Please, lets just LIGHTen up on them?
Stop pushing them so hard and just LOVE & LET
them beeee just children.
