What form the divine light took has been the subject of a contradictory jumble of theories since the 1600s, when the famed German astronomer and astrologer Johannes Kepler suggested there could have been both an astronomical event that attracted the Magi’s attention - and also a star more like an angel of light, which miraculously led them to Bethlehem.
