Energy centre. There are six within the human body, and a seventh one hovers at a place just above the physical head. It is believed that the energy or life-force of humans lies coiled in a tangle of nerve-cells at the base of the sixth chakra (the root chakra) and that this energy can be awakened through yogic practices, raised through the other five chakras successively, and finally merged with the thousand-petalled lotus chakra just beyond the head of the body. Some equate the seventh chakra with the pineal gland in the brain.
