In the earliest Vedas, Som is repeatedly invoked to help bolster power, slay ignorance, purify thoughts and lead one on the straight path. Sometimes it is meant to signify a slightly intoxicating drink prepared by crushing the leaves of a particular plant. Som is sometimes equated with Moon in its aspect as the repository of the nectar that nourishes trees and makes the waters flow.
