Star Watch

by Frances Firesong Ellison

September, dominated by work-centered Virgo, is traditionally the month of going back to school, bringing in the harvest, and getting down to business. The lazy days of summer fade into the background as autumn leaves begin to turn and cool breezes remind us that it’s time to buckle down and begin preparing for the winter ahead.

Overall, it looks like September will be a fairly positive month, especially for those who had trouble communicating last month. Mercury goes direct on September 2, which should smooth out misunderstood messages and machinery overloads. Plus, Venus sextiles Jupiter, in Mercury’s home sign of Virgo, on the same day — which almost guarantees that you can make up with your Sweetie and put any harsh misunderstandings to rest.

Venus enters Leo on September 6 — Labor Day in the United States and Canada — energizing the Fire signs to take center stage with their natural enthusiasm and generosity.

Alas, the month is not a bowl of cherries, however, because September 10-15 gives us cause to pause and say, “What’s happening?”

Well, what’s happening is that Mars squares Pluto, Venus quincunxes Mars, Sun squares Pluto, Mercury opposes Uranus and finally the Sun conjuncts Mars, all in a short enough time span to make our heads swim! Sun joining Mars actually isn’t a bad aspect if the energy is used productively, but with the squares and oppositions of the week it will take a pretty level head to contain the energy it releases! At any rate, this flurry of stressful aspects makes for a pretty jangled and argumentative week in which it’s best to keep one’s own counsel and generally lay low.

Whatever breaks during this hectic week, however, can be mended September 17-22 as the Sun and Mars both sextile Saturn, Sun conjuncts Jupiter and then enters Libra, the sign of harmony and amour. At the end of the week Jupiter leaves Virgo and enters Libra on the 25th, where the expansive, benevolent planet will be more comfortable and probably more jovial … really good for you Librans out there, or those with your Moon or Ascendant in Libra.

There’s a lot of Mercurial activity the 22nd through the 30th, again indicating that communication and mental activity becomes important. But weigh your words carefully on the 22nd as Mercury squares Pluto, and don’t let passing differences of opinion get you down since Mercury in Virgo is very set in its ways and Pluto in Sagittarius is determined to bring about change according to its own vision. Watch out for compulsive thinking, and think twice before you speak, as your words can become hurtful arrows that have a cruel sting.

The entire month of September might well be called “Mercury month,” as Virgo’s ruling planet goes from making a station at 26 degrees Leo on the 2nd to entering Virgo on the 10th, then entering Libra on the 28th and quincunxing volatile Uranus on the 30th. That’s a lot of activity even for the speedy Messenger of the Gods, making this a month for experiencing many changing thoughts and ideas. In fact, this is a good month to keep track of your thoughts by writing them down in a journal or diary. By the end of the month you’ll be amazed at all the changes you’ve gone through!

Lest I forget, those of you who are celebrating a birthday on the 13th or 14th, depending on your time zone, are in for an eventful year ahead with a new Moon right on your natal Virgo Sun sign. It remains to be seen how the events will play out over the course of the year, but it will be an eventful one nonetheless!
