Petition to Stop Live Animal Export

To The Honourable the President and Members of the Senate in Parliament assembled:

The Petition of the undersigned protests in the strongest possible terms against the live-export of Australian animals.

During transportation the animals are subjected to inhumane conditions resulting in unacceptably high death rates and suffering. Upon arrival, they suffer extreme cruelty and barbarism prior to and during slaughter - practices that are illegal in Australia.

Your petitioners call upon the members of the Senate to immediately, and without delay, ban the live export of Australian livestock.

2007-12-05 Robin Chapple Australia Live cattle and sheep transport and export has been exposed repeatedly as involving cruel practices, producing high mortality rates. It is particularly problematic when animals are exported to areas with lesser animal welfare legislation than Australia. In 2005 over 35,000 sheep and 700 cattle died in transit. (www.pacat.org.au) Live export is also not in Australia’s best finacial interest. A report in 2000 by agricultural economists Dr Heilbron and Terry Larkin found that the live sheep export industry directly competes in the Middle East market with Australian chilled or frozen sheep meat industry products. The report also concludes that, if the sheep and cattle currently exported were instead processed in Australia, a further approximately $1.5 billion would be added to Australia’s gross domestic product, there would be around $250 million more in household income and around 10,500 full-]time jobs would be created. I would like to see the strengthening of national animal welfare legislation that prohibits cruelty and ensures the welfare of agricultural animals and end the live export of animals for slaughter overseas. The live export ban sould not extend to animals such as camels, horses and bulls for live use as long as conditions are maintained at the current high standard.

2007-12-02 Penny Johnson Australi Are Australian rabbits exported to China or not? Someone said the Chinese skinned them alive. This is so cruel. Also cutting animals throats four times, stabbing their eyeballs and cutting their tendons. The slaughterhouse workers are so cruel they stab the poor animal in the eye, and after its throat is cut, they cut the underside of its tail! The footage she smuggled out of Bassatin had international repercussions. It was major news in Egypt and Australia, prompted a flurry of diplomatic meetings between the two countries, and led to the suspension of live exports while the federal government figured out a compromise that would satisfy the powerful trade lobby, farmers, and a concerned public. Their key solution was two Memoranda of Understanding, in which Egypt agreed to treat Australian animals humanely, in accordance with international standards. After they were signed, trade resumed in October last year. Seven days later, a shipload of 40,000 sheep were sent to Egypt. White was there to meet them. Even though the government website states that "initial shipments to Egypt will be closely monitored for compliance with the MoUs", she says she was the only Australian there. Some of the sheep went to abattoirs; many others went to market-places, and were sold to locals for the religious festival Eid-al-Adha. White filmed struggling sheep being stuffed into the boots of cars or tied onto roof racks. She tailed cars, followed buyers down dark alleys, and watched sheep being dragged up stairs by the legs, before getting their throats cut in filthy communal toilets. Her footage proves, she says, that the MoUs are worthless. "Nothing has changed. The MoU has no legal standing. There are no animal protection laws in Egypt, no way of enforcing the MoU, and no penalties. It was just an agreement to get the animals back in there."
